5 Must-Do’s in Your New Home

For most of the population, no matter what country, buying a house is most probably the most costly and important purchase of their lives. Although this has been the case for quite some time now, within the last decade or so, the prices of properties in big cities have been skyrocketing to absurd amounts. In cities like London, you can find yourself paying as much as a whopping one million Dollars for a mere 25.2 square meters of space, making some houses cost around 14.75m British Pounds. Keep in mind this is not the price of a giant villa with an enormous garden, just a nice house somewhere in Belgravia. With prices like these, it is no wonder that the large majority of the population can only afford to buy one house within their lifetime. Now with such a costly purchase out of the way, chances are you want to keep your house in the best shape possible, as long as possible. Like an expensive MacBook, maintenance is possible, but usually costly, let’s have a look at some things which are a must-do for everyone who finally possess their very own piece of the world.

House Recon

No matter how well you thought you might have checked, no matter how much you saw through the tricks of whoever was selling you the house, some imperfections are eventually going to show after daily life in your new home. While this may be inevitable and just a part of buying property, there are things you can do to minimize the long term damages.

1. Check for cracks

This is an especially important thing to check for if the house is not a building from the last few decades. Victorian-era property has a reputation of having minor cracks around walls and wherever else. Usually, this is not a gigantic cause for concern, but if you do not patch up the cracks while they are small, they will continue to grow, eventually turning patching them up into a costly and possibly lengthy operation.

2. The walls

The walls do not always have eyes, but they might have something which might cost you a hefty maintenance fee. Most importantly check if they are flat, this might sound ridiculous but it is a rather common problem. If there are any “deformities” or “bubbles” on the walls, take them as a warning and take action. These kinds of anomalies on walls can be an indication of slight movement in the walls, or a sign of dampness.

3. Damp spots

Though briefly touched upon in the previous paragraph, damp spots on the walls or wherever else can prove to be quite dangerous. Dampness tends to invite and house mould, mould then comes with it’s own set of potential health risks and unsightly dark coloured blotches on your house walls. Exposure to mouldy environments can cause a plethora of health issues, some people are more sensitive to mould in the air, causing skin irritation, stuffy noses, encouraging colds, eye irritation, irritation of the throat as well as many others. Long time exposure can lead to chronic lung disease which may be hard to detect and diagnose. Mould gets into the house through windows, air conditioning systems, open doorways and the sort, making it very common. Getting rid of it is not easy either, fortunately for you Mould Removal London and a few other companies, use the latest technology to effectively get rid of mould growths. It is highly recommended to not cheap out on mould removal services, household mould removal methods very rarely prove effective.

4. Look up

It is worth going for a quick check-up and looking at your house’s roof from outside. Look for any missing roof tiles which could cause leaks (consequently causing dampness and mould) or even more tiles to shift in the near future. Replace or fix the affected roof tiles as soon as possible while it is still cheap to do so. Check if your downpipes and gutters are in working order, check for signs of ageing, regularly clear them out. Unless you live very high up, chances are all that will be needed for cleaning them out is a ladder and some gloves. Clogged gutters tend to be a problem during winter, the weight of snow and ice buildup can cause them to break off or shatter.

5. Leaks

Get someone to check your roof. If your roof tiles need maintenance, then this will be a 2 in 1. Specify that you need them to check your roof for any leaks or other causes for concern, and if there are any, get them to fix it. With some negotiating it is often possible to get a roof evaluation free of charge. Despite an initial lack of clear impact on the house, roof leaks allow water to slowly trickle in and wear away at the walls. This process is silent and invisible until it is too late and you have a giant damp patch on your wall, so don’t delay, act now.
