Making Your Home Guest Friendly: 11 Tips for The Living Room

I’m continuing with my “Make Your Home Guest Friendly” series, and today have some tips to help make your living room guest friendly.  Among the list, I tried to include tips for atmosphere, decor, and for making your home a more comfortable place.

 1. I think the most important thing is to have a nice , yet comfortable sofa.

2. Be sure that your room is well lit for a variety of activities.  You should have overhead lighting, as well as lamp light. Also, open the curtains and blinds during the day to let the natural light in.

3.  If you’re having overnight guests and you do not have a guest room, considering investing in an air matress, and if you have guests over often, you may want to invest in a nice futon or a sofa bed.

4.  Keep living room decor simple and even remove accent pieces that might get in the way of overnight guests.

5. Create space in a closet or another room for your overnight guest’s belongings.

6. Add fresh flowers to the room for a splash of color and a fresh scent.

7.  Add throw pillows to your couch to add color.  And consider fabrics and prints that really stand out and create a contrast.

8.  Use a patterned rug for added warmth and color.

9.  Place a few books and magazines in a basket or magazine rack, or on top of a coffee table.

10. Create a space. If you have a small house, you may find it difficult to seat people or perhaps your living room is just too small.  In this case, you may consider removing unnecessary furniture from the room temporarily.   And in the space you’ve created, bring in some extra chairs if needed.

11.  Relax and allow your guests to relax and make themselves at home.

  1. Would you believe I have two sofas and two love seats in my house and no sofa bed… Hand me down couches… But I think I need at least one! 🙂

  2. Good tips, all of them. Comfy is always good when guests visit as well. Just being able to relax and unwind!

  3. I don’t have a sofabed, but I do have a futon, does that help? Hubby’s family was recently here and it was nice to have a place for some of them to stay here.
