10 Outdoor Projects for Your Spring To Do List

Spring is almost here, and you know what that means!  It’s almost time to get out and work in the yard!  At our house, my hubby does the mowing and the majority of the yard work, but I do assist him with a lot of projects, particularly things like working in the flower beds and any project that involves building, painting, and making our yard and home prettier.

Last year we did a number of simple budget-friendly projects to improve the look of our yard and front porch area, and this year we will be continuing our work.  We have some general maintenance to do this spring, and then I hope we can accomplish a few new goals this year as well!  Today I’m going to share 10 outdoor projects for your spring to do list!

House

1. Clean.  Use a pressure washer or power washer to outside your home.  Clean windows, outside walls, walkways, and drive ways.  Also, clean out your gutters.

2.  Add a coat of paint.  We painted our shutters last year, going from grey to crimson, and it’s amazing how much this bright and bold color has improved the look of the house.  We also put a fresh coat of paint of the floor of our porch and repainted our porch rails.  This simple and subtle changes can really do a lot to renew the look of your home and make it pop.

Scotts Weed and Feed

3. Cultivate your yard.  This winter we’ve had a mix of fair temperatures and a lot of rain, and with that, we now have a lot of weeds in our yard!  I have a feeling it’s almost time for the first yard mowing of the year, but on top of that, it is nice if you can actually kill those weeds!

We recently purchased some Scotts® Turf Builder® Bonus® S Weed & Feed Southern.  This blend works really well in the Southern region of the United States (where we live).  You apply the product anytime weeds are growing.  Just add it to dry grass, and then water the grass immediately. The product helps to kill dollarweed, clover and other lawn weeds, while it feeds and strengthens your grass roots, protecting the grass against heat and drought.

Scotts at Walmart

You can find Scotts® Turf Builder® Bonus® S Weed & Feed Southern at Walmart Stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Texas.

Light Fixture

4. New Lighting.  Last year we swapped out a gold fixture for this lovely new darker and larger fixture.  It has a very classy look, and the the dark color is a great contrast with our white home, and it lights up our porch really well at night.

Painted Table

5. Clean or paint lawn furniture.  You don’t have to buy a whole new set of lawn furniture to get your yard spring ready.  A power washer or even just a little bottle of spray cleaner and a rag can make your furniture new again.  You can also use a little make to makeover an old piece of lawn furniture.  When I found the table pictured above, it was black, and I decided to paint it and a couple of other pieces red so they could match up well with my red shutters.

Flower Bed

6. Prune trees and trim bushes.  The timing for pruning trees and shrubs can vary depending on the species of plant your are dealing with and the climate you live in.  Where we live, we always try to trim crape myrtle trees in the late winter to early spring time before the plants bloom.  We also have azaleas, and it is recommended that they be trimmed shortly after they bloom.

7. Flower Bed Maintenance.  Spruce up your flower beds by pulling weeds, trimming existing plants, adding new bark as needed, and planting new flowers.

Steps

8. Add new landscaping timbers and/or landscaping stones.  A nice walkway leading up to your door or out to your back patio, or a new frame or border for your flower bed can really add new ambiance to your yard.  Not only does it provide definition, but the materials used can help create the style and atmosphere you desire.

Yard Ornament

9. Add lawn ornaments.  You don’t have to go all out, creating concrete or clay zoo around your yard.  Just a few eye catching ornaments can add a lot to your garden or patio spot.

Flowers

10. Decorate with flowers.  Flowers obviously add color and breathe new life in to any area where they are placed.  Large decorative pots, filled with color flowers are especially perfect for your doorways and patio areas.
