Sick Just Got Real and a $25 Visa Giveaway

Sick Just Got Real

If you’re a parent you know what it is like to have a sick child.  When they babies, it is especially a terrible experience because they can’t tell you what is wrong, and that makes it all the more scary for you.  Even as they get to be school age and can tell you what’s wrong with complaints like “my tummy aches,” the feeling of helplessness never truly goes away.  Even when it’s just strep throat or a simple virus that’s been going around, you’d give just about anything to make them feel better, and yet all you can really do is provide them with the prescribed medicine (and a little bit of TLC).

I recently watched this video from the Sick Just Got RealTM campaign.  It’s called, “A Mom Can Dream.”  And it goes inside a ladies head, as she dreams of all the things she’d rather be doing, from drinking a glass of wine to having just a moment alone in the bathroom, until she is reminded of the most important thing of all, having children who are well.

I’m sure anyone out there who’s a parent can relate to this.  You dream of that great escape, before something knocks you back down to reality.

Although we are currently trying to have a baby, right now we don’t have to worry about sickness too much at our house.  Noah is a teenager, and other than the occasional upset stomach from eating too many tacos, he doesn’t get sick very often.  But a couple of months ago, he came down with a bad case of bronchitis.  At first we thought it was just your basic cold, because he didn’t have a fever or anything, and Gary told him that he could not miss school just for that.

Then one morning Noah asked again to stay out of school, insisting he really didn’t feel good; of course, he didn’t ask to stay home until we were over half way on the drive to school, and Gary had already told him, “No.”  So there I was on the phone with his dad, finding out what he thought, and Gary finally said, “I’ll leave it up to you. But if he stays out, he’s going to the doctor.” (Gary was convinced that it was just a cold and that we just had a typical teenager on our hands who wanted to stay out of school for a day.)

So finally I pulled up at the school, and then turned right back around to go to the doctor.  And this is where I can’t help but think about the lady in the video, because on this day, I had gotten virtually no sleep, because I was up late working.  In fact, I had actually planned to come home and take a nap after I dropped Noah off at school.  And on top of that icky feeling I had from not sleeping, I was there in my jogging pants, glasses, and bad hair.  I had the complete “I’m just dropping someone off and am not fit for public viewing” look going!

But I sat there. We actually sat there for 2 hours, until Noah was given an antibiotic shot and a steroid shot.  The doctor also prescribed an antibiotic, a 7-day round of steroids, cough syrup, and a medicine for congestion.  I think when the doctor handed out all of this, we could have definitely said that, “Sick Just Got RealTM” in more ways than one!

Oh it was so scary…we rushed to the ER….it was winter…and by the time we got there he was better. 🙂 Had no idea anything about croup…..they told me if its cold to just let them breathe in that cold air….and it helps.
