Homegating with Skittles

My family is so excited about football season being back again! How about you?  Each week of football season, we watch many games, but our favorite thing to watch is college football on Saturdays, and for this, we always like to have a lot of food and snacks on hand!  With football season starting in September and going through and past the New Year, I find it’s important to mix things up and come up with great menu items each week.  For example, we may have pizza and wings one week, and the following week we may have pulled pork sandwiches or hamburgers and hot dog.

But for me, football food doesn’t always have to be about the savory; it can also be about the sweet.  For the sweet, I like everything from fruit and cream cheese dip to cupcakes and cookies, to candy!  For the first Saturday of college football, we had an array of delicious foods to serve, including one of my favorite candies, Skittles®.  Today I’m going to show you some ideas for homegating with Skittles.  I’ll show you how I added Skittles to our party menu, and I’m going to show you how you can use Skittles to bring a little fun to the party!

Football Party Table

For our family football party, I usually like to decorate the table with a green tablecloth, a little handmade football bunting, football field  placements, and other football tableware.  And of course, we have some great food!  Last week, we did a fruit tray, a meat & cheese tray, pizza & wings, chips & dip, and a little taste of the rainbow: Skittles!

Right now when you make Skittles a party of your game time, you can enter the Call An Eatible Sweepstakes and possibly win tickets to an NFL game.  Check out the sweepstakes page for details.

Skittles

Skittles are a great classic candy that everyone loves, and it’s almost impossible to eat just one!  Aside from their great fruit flavor, their bright colors also light up any party table!

They are also available in several varieties, including Original Skittles, as well as Sour, Tropical, and Wild Berry.  And they come in several sizes such as the individual bags you find at the checkout counter, individual boxes, and large bags.  With all these sizes and flavors available, it gives you the opportunity to do a lot of fun things for your party.

You could simple fill a dish or jar with the candies;  you could make individual goody bags for everyone, or you could fill a basket or cover a platter with the individual sized Skittles boxes.

Skittles at Kroger

Skittles candies can be found in the candy aisle of your local Kroger store.  In select stores, you may also find them on their special “Call an Eatible” cardboard display.

Skittles Activities

Aside from serving Skittles candies, as a sweet, bite-sized option to go along other football party treats, you can also use these candies for some fun party games and activities.  Here are some examples.

Skittles Homegating Game

You can fill a jar full of Skittles, and then give everyone a handout where they can write down a guess on how many Skittles are in the jar and how many there are of each color.  Whomever comes closest to guessing each number gets a small prize (like a box of Skittles).  Click here to download the printable for this activity.

And if you love this guessing game, you could also ask your guests to write down their prediction for the final score of the big game or even their score prediction for the end of each quarter!

Next I have a game for football beginners! The printable sheet has basic questions about football, and you can use the Skittles like a game piece to give answers for all the questions (as shown in the picture above). Give each of your participants a box of Skittles to use for this activities, or give each person a tiny cup of Skittles to use.  (For this, I used some heavy duty cupcake wrappers that look like footballs.) Click here to download the printable.

For kids, you can also use this same concept to have them answer simple math problems, practice their counting, or keep up with the score of the football game.
